General information about Barcelona


Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain. It is set on the north-eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona is the capital of the province of Catalonia. It sits with Tarragona 98 km south of it and Girona 100 km north of it. Barcelona is an advanced city where there is always a lot going on. The city itself has an inhabitancy of 1,505 581 people but if you he outlying areas of Barcelona then this number increases to around 4,000 000.Due to it having such amazing architecture it is always buzzing with tourists. It has old history from the Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance time periods but a lot of Barcelona’s architecture has been built in the last 100 years.

Barcelona is very close to the sea with it being only 4 meters above sea level. Barcelona’s streets are line with trees and I the region of Barcelona itself there is plenty of countryside. The weather in Barcelona is pleasant with the average minimum temperature being around 5 or 6 degrees Celsius and the average maximum temperature reaching around 26 or 27 degrees Celsius. Because it is quite far north in Spain it has more wet days however these are only averaging to about 6-9 days a month an it has a respectable humidity level most of the time with it ranging from between 59% and 78%.

In Barcelona (and the rest of Catalonia) they have there own type of Spanish called Catalonian however they do also speak Castilian Spanish. Barcelona has a large international airport. It is situated 13 km (8 miles) south west of Barcelona city centre. The region of Barcelona is 3600 kilometres squared in the province area but the actually city itself is only 101 kilometres squared.
